History and Heritage

Famous all over the world for its mineral water, the spa town of Évian-les-Bains has preserved beautiful buildings with old-world late 19th-century and early 20th-century charm.

The Buvette Cachat, the Griffon of the Cachat Source testify to the resort’s former life and are the iconic places in Evian. Exceptional cultural sites: Villa Lumière, Palais Lumière, Maison Gribaldi, Funicular, Notre Dame de l’Assomption Church, Theatre and Casino make Evian a recognised city of culture.

A historic tour consisting of 24 stages is spread throughout the town centre. In front of each site, you will find explanatory information in French and English.

Evian and Water

The discovery of Evian mineral water dates back to 1790, when, during a walk, a nobleman from Auvergne, the Marquis of Lessert, refreshed himself at the Fountain of Saint Catherine located on the property of one Monsieur Cachat.

Created by the retreat of the Rhône Glacier nearly 15 000 years ago, Lake Geneva is the largest lake in Western Europe.
The Rhône River enters from the east and exits by the west.

Dominated to the south by the Chablais Massif, Evian is a dream destination for mountain lovers.
From family walks to easy hikes to summit climbs, there's a nearby trail for every ability level and desire.
The Pays de Gavot, a high plateau overlooking Evian a dozen kilometres away, offers numerous itineraries, from the Dranse Gorges to the peaks of the Mémises (1 677 m) to the Dent d'Oche Massif (2 220 m).

With its aim to become an international cultural destination, the town has been the home to a new cultural site since 2006, the Palais Lumière.
Evian also has art galleries and stages a variety of quality cultural events.

The holiday resort town of Evian is the adminisrative centre of a canton of 28 000 inhabitants and a lively shopping and market town all year long.
The town offers over 250 shops and services.
